Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into American Gold Metals LLC in Westlake Village, CA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

   What is in the case today may be gone tomorrow

   Coin shops turn inventory. A picture from last month is not a hold. If you want a date or a grade, call or start a want list. Showing up and hoping the exact piece is still there is how people get disappointed.

   Shopping an offer is etiquette when you are honest

   “I want to hear one more shop, then I will decide” is adult. “I already promised it to you” when you have not is not. If you come back, say what changed. Dealers respect a straight process. They do not respect being used as a foil.

   Show week can empty the shop — or pack it

   If the dealer is on the road, the store may be closed or on shorter hours. If they just got back, they may be unpacking. Check this listing for upcoming shows and call if your visit is important. It is not personal. The bourse is part of the business.

   Stay with your coins

   Do not leave a box on the counter and wander the cases. Do not ask the dealer to watch your bag while you go to the car. Your lot stays in front of you until the deal is done or you pack up. That is how both sides stay comfortable.

   One extra person is fine. A committee is not.

   A spouse or a sibling who must agree is welcome. A table of relatives debating every coin is not a shop visit. Pick the decision-makers. Leave the rest home or in the car. The dealer can talk to two people. They cannot run a family meeting.
