Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Heartland Coins in Marion, IL. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Count money together, then put it away

Whether you are paying or getting paid, count at the counter where both of you can see. Then put it away. That protects you and the shop. If something is off, it is much easier to fix before anyone has left the glass.

  2. Never step behind the counter

That side of the glass is staff only — even if you “just want to show them something in better light.” Hand the coins across. Wait to be invited if they have a viewing area. Crossing the rail uninvited is how visits end early.

  3. Bring coins in a way they can actually look at them

Trays, albums, and labeled bags beat a torn grocery sack. Do not pour coins onto glass. Hand them a box they can work through. Dirt, food, and loose batteries in the same tin make a poor first impression and a slower look.

  4. If you set a time, be on it

Some shops work by appointment on bigger lots. Be on time. Call if you are late or cannot come. The slot they held is time they did not give someone else. Reliability gets you invited back.

  5. Follow the house rules without a debate

Bags on the floor, backpacks zipped, one person at the glass — shops set these for a reason. Argue about it and the visit is already off. If a rule is unclear, ask. If it is clear, do it.
