Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Montgomery Chandler, Inc in Silsbee, TX. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. No magnets, acids, or scratch tests on the pad

The shop has the tools if a test is needed. Do not perform experiments on the glass. You can damage the coin and the counter. If you think something is fake, say why and let them look.

  2. Never step behind the counter

That side of the glass is staff only — even if you “just want to show them something in better light.” Hand the coins across. Wait to be invited if they have a viewing area. Crossing the rail uninvited is how visits end early.

  3. Bring the holders, papers, and boxes they came in

Original packaging, certificates, and grading-company holders matter. Do not dump everything into a bag to “make it easier.” The dealer would rather see it the way it has been kept. Leave coins in PCGS, NGC, or ANACS holders.

  4. Cash is still common. That is normal.

Coin and bullion shops have worked in cash for a long time. It is not shady by itself. Count together at the counter. Do not count a stack in the parking lot with the door open. If you are uncomfortable carrying cash, say so and ask what else they can do.

  5. Regulars get easier visits because they are known

Introduce yourself. Come back. Pay as you said you would. The second visit is almost always smoother than the first. A local shop is a relationship, not a vending machine. That works in your favor when you have something unusual.
