Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Seattle Coin Shop in Seattle, WA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. If you set a time, be on it

Some shops work by appointment on bigger lots. Be on time. Call if you are late or cannot come. The slot they held is time they did not give someone else. Reliability gets you invited back.

  2. Bring identification on a larger visit

A license in the car does not help at the counter. If you might sell, buy something expensive, or move cash, bring ID in with you. It speeds things up and avoids an awkward pause after you already agreed.

  3. Large cash deals may require identification

That is federal law on certain cash amounts, not the shop being nosy. Bring a government ID if you plan to move a lot of cash either direction. A dealer who asks for ID on a large deal is doing the job the right way.

  4. Ask before you touch anything in the case

The dealer will hand you a coin or put it on a pad. Do not reach into a tray or slide a slab toward yourself. Handle coins by the edges if they are raw. If you drop something, say so immediately.

  5. “Best I can do” is a sentence, not an insult

They have to sell it, hold it, and stay in business. You can say no. You can ask if they can do better on part of the lot. You should not treat a firm number as a personal slight. A calm “I need to think about that” is enough.
