Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Tipsico Coin LLC in Eagle, ID. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

1. 01

   Do not make a deal with another customer at the counter

   If you overhear what someone is selling, that is not an invitation. Do not offer to buy their coins, do not quote a price over their shoulder, and do not ask the shop to “introduce you.” The counter is the shop’s workplace. Side deals in the aisle put the dealer in an ugly spot and make other customers uncomfortable.

   Stay with your coins

   Do not leave a box on the counter and wander the cases. Do not ask the dealer to watch your bag while you go to the car. Your lot stays in front of you until the deal is done or you pack up. That is how both sides stay comfortable.

3. 03

   Do not crack a graded holder in the shop

   PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and CAC holders are part of the product. Opening one at the counter to “see it better” can wreck the value. If you want it out, that is a decision you make at home, not a demonstration.

4. 04

   A buy offer is not an appraisal

   An offer is what this shop will pay today. An appraisal is a written opinion, often for insurance or an estate, and it is a different service. If you need a document, say that first. Do not treat a verbal number as a formal appraisal.

   Bring the holders, papers, and boxes they came in

   Original packaging, certificates, and grading-company holders matter. Do not dump everything into a bag to “make it easier.” The dealer would rather see it the way it has been kept. Leave coins in PCGS, NGC, or ANACS holders.
